Description
This is a good quality (but from a grainier older photo) hand printed silver halide photograph, (not a digital inkjet print) custom printed in a darkroom from a copy negative from the original, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' surface semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper, shrink wrapped, cropped, and mounted on a single black 8x10 inch backing board**which is part of the print as you can see here (see photo)
, with caption and photography information on the back, of a 'Surfing Polo' competition at Waikiki Beach in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel 1928+? It is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has photography and preservation tips included in the label on the back.
From the size of the crowd on the beach this must have been a popular event (perhaps during the resurrection of the ‘Makahiki’ sporting events competitions which had been banned by the missionaries). It was probably members of the Hui Nalu or Royal Hawaiian surf teams against members of the Outrigger Canoe Club. The sport was recently revived and many of the events are now being held again each year in an effort to revive and preserve the historic Hawaiian ocean sports competitions. Please note that in the future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography. This is a popular photo at retail locations in Hawaii.
It would make a great gift for a surfer or someone who likes historical photos of Waikiki. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
The ancient and very spiritual sport of surfing started in Hawaii and there are indications that it may be more than several hundred years old. There are many old stories about ancient Hawaiian royalty and commoners surfing longer than Hawaiian history records. Captain Cooke in the 1700's mentioned surfing in his logs. The original surfboards were basically heavy, flat, wooden planks, 6-16+ feet in length, 5-10 inches in thickness, that were hand carved from logs and treated with oils and varnishes to make them waterproof. They were bulky and awkward to ride compared to modern boards. There were two kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times, an 'Olo' ( the longer heavy boards mostly rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (the shorter boards rode by the commoners). In ancient times most of the better surf breaks were reserved for royalty. To be an accomplished surfer was a goal of many Alii and royalty which gained them more recognition and status in the society. Its likely that commoners who were excellent surfers were allowed to surf with royalty and gained a higher position in the society. Please note that In the future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original and reproduction photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Larger unmounted prints are also available, please inquire

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper. The photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a copy negative. **When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10 inch backing board you will be able to see the black backing board (which you can see here on this print) around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a thin margin around the edges of the photo.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
