Exquisite Decorative Set of 7 PLATES 8
1/2" Diameter
from Meissen Royal Porcelain & State’s Manufactory, Hand Painted Assorted FRUITS, FLOWERS, MOTHS on BASKETWEAVE SCALLOPED Rim w/GOLD, circa 1860-1924
DESCRIPTION:
These beautiful 8 1/2" plates were hand painted using a multicolor on white color palette with bold gold on the scalloped rims. One of the most interesting characteristics is the 1 1/4" wide band of embossed basket-weaving between the rim and the verge. This is divided into 12 sections by the scalloping. There are two moths on each plate along with a flower spray and a small fruit spray. The lagre center sprays are various fruits and flowers. The back of the plates is a high white porcelain
. We are pricing these based on 6 undamaged plates and including free of charge a 7th plate which has a flat rim flake on the front. See photo labeled plate #7.
CONDITION:
While this set of plates is classified as used, the condition is superb with one exception. Plate #7 (which we are not charging for) has a rim flake on the front. Otherwise, there are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear on the gold. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS:
The plates have a diameter of 8 1/2" and a height of 1".
HISTORY/MARKS:
After much experimentation, frustration and failure, the first European white porcelain was produced in 1708 under the direction of Johann Friedrich Böttger. Subsequently, on June 6, 1710 Meissen Porcelain Manufactory set up at Albrechtsburg Castle in Meißen under the ownership of Augustus the Strong, Elector Prince of Saxony and King of Poland. The first use of the now famous “crossed swords” mark occurred in 1722 with many later variations. Meissen porcelain is of indisputable quality and has remained such throughout the years. After German reunification in 1990, Meissen was returned to the State of Saxony which is the sole owner. Even though its products are expensive, the high quality and artistic value make Meissen porcelain very desirable by museums, collectors and the wealthy.
The back mark is that of Meissen Royal Porcelain & State’s Manufactory, Saxony, Germany, cited by Robert E. Röntgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present as the Blue underglaze mark #1563 which was used 1860-1924. (Also the website marks4ceramics shows this mark as #11 with the same time period). Six of the plates have incised #’s 2906 & 22 while one plate has 3 & 22 incised.
