DETAILS OF ITEM
This piece measures 8 inches tall. It depicts a white Akita dog wearing a Yokozuna champion regalia called a “Mawashi”. Artist signed at the bottom "Rainosuke," it comes with its matching original wooden presentation box. The cover of the box reads “Dog (the Year of the Dog), Figurine, made by Rainosuke.
The artist is Ishida Rainosuke, of Kyoto, Japan. According to the insert that comes with the piece, he wanted to convey the regal image of a champion Akita dog by having it wear the Unryu style Sumo Champion Yokozuna Mawashi apron.
Kyo ware (also called Kyo-Yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Kyoto, Japan. One of the more known styles of Kyo-Yaki is with the distinctive design and flamboyant coloring. Though the artist presented the piece with a more serene appearance by using a soft cream colored white glaze, the gold color accent would hint the intentionally controlled subdued elegance of Kyo-Yaki at its best. The condition is very good.
