Description
This is a nicevery grainy (almost looks like a painting)
hand printed silver halide photograph, custom printed in a darkroom from a copy negative from the original, archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford 'Pearl' surface semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board
*which is part of the print as you can see here (see photo)
, with caption, history, and photography information on the back of a Hawaiian man fishing in the newly built Ala Wai Canal with Diamond Head crater (ancient volcano) in the background, circa 1910+? This one looks a little darker but the one we're selling is a little lighter with less contrast. It is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has photography and preservation tips included in the label on the back, is a popular photo with visitors here in Hawaii, and comes with complete caption information on the back of the photo.
It has the unique look of a silver halide gelatin photo, and is still a very nice historic and artistic print.
It would make a great gift for someone who likes this area or historic images of Hawaii.
The canal was started in 1906 but was never finished. it was supposed to go from the ocean at the Natatorium to Ala Moana Beach and was left incomplete on the east side when the money for the project was no longer available in the 1920’s. The purpose of the canal was to drain the swampy areas and control mosquitoes. It is also fed by small streams from the Manoa and St. Louis areas. Today the canal is used by kayakers, stand up paddlers, and canoe clubs. Because of the years of pollution and contamination most people won’t swim in the canal, and locals question eating fish from the canal, although there are a lot of fish in the canal, apparently some homeless and other folks do. When the water was cleaner several decades ago there were Samoan crabs, other crustaceans, and several varieties of small fish that could be eaten. We caught them when we were kids with bread on a string and the little red fish nets with long handles. One wonders what it would be like now if the project had been completed to the Natatorium area to the ocean.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original and reproduction photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. With proper care this print should last 100 years.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper. The photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do, however, try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a negative, and is cropped to a slightly smaller size because of the format. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print.
An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot be easily removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. If you want to use a larger frame and can't figure out how to do it with the photo mounted on the backing board, contact us and we can explain how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10 inch frame and displaying the image as is.
