    Description

    For sale is
a really nice cup and saucer made by Meissen in about 1740. The saucer is hand painted with a large scene in the center and the beaker style cup with two scenes after Teniers showing people in daily life which I always really enjoy seeing. The scene on the saucer includes a bearded gentleman leaning in to kiss his wife in a landscape surrounding while the cup has one scene of a nicely dressed gentleman leaning on a column wand his cane on one side and a couple strolling through a landscape towards a building in the background on the other side. The rim of both pieces has a basket weave design to the paste and there are some small single flowers scattered about and a bit of gold trim to the edge. The flowers are still in the woodcut style. Both are in great condition with some very minimal wear and two of the tiniest nibble on the cup which are gilded over so probably from when it was made. They display perfectly and are about as nice as one could hope for in terms of condition. The saucer is 1 inch tall and 5.25 inches in diameter and the cup is 2.875 inches tall with a top diameter of 2.75 inches. Both are marked with the under glaze blue crossed swords mark underneath as shown. The cup definitely does not have a number impressed so it dates to just before 1740 while the saucer has something impressed right where the foot ring meets the flat part of the saucer that looks a bit like the greater or less than sign. Could be a Dreher's mark or a partial number. No way to tell.
