This is a MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATE, Series 481, FIVE CENTS
Military payment certificates were a form of currency used to pay U. S. military personnel in certain foreign countries from 1946 to 1973. They were created to keep U. S. currency from inflating local currencies and hampering efforts to stabilize the local economies of occupied areas.
MPCs could be redeemed for US dollars when a soldier left an MPC zone. If a soldier went on leave then the MPCs could be converted into local currency. Series 481 was issued from June 20, 1951 – May 25, 1954.
They were issued to US military personnel in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Morocco, Philippines, Ryukyus, Scotland, Trieste, and Yugoslavia.
Replacement notes have a number at the end of the serial number, where as the standard notes have a letter at the end of the serial number.
